This Bible storybook for children is especially notable for its many large, delicate, and detailed watercolor illustrations. The artwork is done in a style reminiscent of the Byzantine icons of the Orthodox Church. These illustrations were originally commissioned for the first edition of the book, which was produced in Greece and published in the Greek language.
Although the illustrations are not icons in the strict theological sense, they strongly appeal to Orthodox Christians of all ages, both children and adults. Orthodox parents and church school teachers may even be tempted to purchase two copies — one for reading, and another to cut up for pictures to use on bulletin boards and in craft projects.
Many of the Bible scenes included in this book are rarely found elsewhere in Orthodox-style religious art. Every opening of the book contains one or more full-color illustrations, making the visual experience constant and engaging.
The book contains a total of 155 stories, including:
74 stories from the Old Testament
81 stories from the New Testament
The text consists of simplified excerpts from actual Scripture, taken from the CEV (Contemporary English Version) translation. At the end of each story, the corresponding Bible chapter is clearly noted for reference. The large, clear print makes the book easy and pleasant to read for both children and adults.
At the back of the book, there are 15 pages of detailed Bible maps, providing helpful geographical and historical context.
Clergy and lay leaders of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit were involved in the editing and production of this American edition, helping ensure faithfulness to Orthodox tradition and educational usefulness.
