Montessori Application  Steps

(Taking $4 + 3 = 7$ as an example):

Place the first addend: Guide the child to find the blue number 4 strip and place it in the first row of the addition board, flush with the left edge. The right end of the strip will align perfectly with the number 4 on the board.

Place the second addend: Find the red number 3 strip and place it immediately to the right of the number 4 strip.

Read the result: Have the child look at the number on the top of the addition board that aligns with the right end of the red strip, which is exactly 7.

Record the equation: The child writes down 4 + 3 = 7 in their addition exercise book.

(Taking $12 - 5 = 7$ as an example):

Isolate the minuend (Masking method): Since the minuend is 12, the numbers 13-18 on the board are not needed. The child needs to take the blank white strip that covers 6 squares and place it on the right side of the board to completely mask the numbers 13-18. At this point, the rightmost number exposed on the board is exactly 12.

Subtract the subtrahend: Find the blue number 5 strip representing the subtrahend, and place it from right to left, flush against the white strip (which means covering 5 squares counting leftwards from 12).

Read the result: Guide the child to look at the last uncovered number on the left side of the board, which is exactly 7.

Record the equation: The child writes down $12 - 5 = 7$ in their exercise book.
