Typical wireless headphones use Bluetooth – and the Xiaomi Buds 5 can do that too, going up to 2.1Mbps thanks to the Snapdragon S7+ audio platform. That’s enough for 48kHz/24-bit lossless audio.

But when paired with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, these buds have a new trick up their sleeve – they can use Wi-Fi to boost the bitrate to 4.2Mbps, which is enough for 96kHz/24-bit lossless audio.

Using Wi-Fi has another benefit as it enables Qualcomm’s XPAN technology – expanded Personal Area Network. This can extend the range of the headphones to your whole home while keeping power consumption low. XPAN maintains support for high-bandwidth audio, low-latency and even features like immersive audio with head tracking. Note that the Wi-Fi functionality is available only on one version of the buds, the Phantom Black one, the other two colors can only do Bluetooth.

The Xiaomi Buds 5 feature dual DACs and dual amps that power two drivers. The frequency response is in the range 15Hz to 50kHz and the audio was tuned with the help of Harman’s Golden Ears team to have more detail in the mid and high frequencies.
