Typical wireless headphones use Bluetooth – and the Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro can do that too, going up to 2.1Mbps thanks to the Snapdragon S7+ audio platform. That’s enough for 48kHz/24-bit lossless audio.

But when paired with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, these buds have a new trick up their sleeve – they can use Wi-Fi to boost the bitrate to 4.2Mbps, which is enough for 96kHz/24-bit lossless audio.

Using Wi-Fi has another benefit as it enables Qualcomm’s XPAN technology – expanded Personal Area Network. This can extend the range of the headphones to your whole home while keeping power consumption low. XPAN maintains support for high-bandwidth audio, low-latency and even features like immersive audio with head tracking. Note that the Wi-Fi functionality is available only on one version of the buds, the Phantom Black one, the other two colors can only do Bluetooth.
